Change Your World Celebration

Our fourth annual signature event took place on Friday, September 28, 2007 at the Grove Hotel in downtown Boise. The successful Celebration featured keynote speaker John Bul Dau (bio below), as well as dinner, a live auction and a very special program. The Celebration serves as the Center’s signature event and has a reputation as one of the most dynamic and effective fundraising events in the community. Our 2006 event featured Holocaust Survivor Gerda Weissmann Klein and we are eager to create another unforgettable night in September 2008. Please stay tuned for speaker and online registration details.

John Bul Dau—Mr. Bul Dau is a Lost Boy of Sudan of international fame. His memoir “God Grew Tired of Us” was released in January by National Geographic and the documentary film of the same name, featuring Dau, won the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. We are excited to have Mr. Dau share his incredible story of survival with our community because building awareness of the ongoing genocide in Darfur has been a priority for the Center.

John Bul Dau has experienced journeys in life that most people never imagine. Dau was born in war-torn Sudan, and in 1987, his village was attacked by government troops involved in the civil war. The violence scattered his family, and Dau was forced to travel on foot for three months until reaching the relative safety of Ethiopia. Dau stayed in a refugee camp in Ethiopia for four years, but civil war then broke out, and he was once against forced to flee. As one of thousands of Sudanese Lost Boys, Dau wandered hundreds of miles and faced disease, starvation, and violence, until arriving in Kenya. After several years living in another refugee camp, he was sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church in Skaneateles, New York, and along with three other Lost Boys, came to the United States in 2001.

In his brief time in the United States, Dau has begun two non-profit 501(c)3 organizations to help Sudanese youth in Syracuse and throughout the United States. He has also earned many awards for his public achievements and for his charitable work.

A limited number of tickets are available for a private, hosted reception with Mr. Bul Dau in advance of the event on the Grove Hotel Terrace. Reception guests will receive autographed copies of John's memoir.
